Both sides go close in the opening stages. Barry Colin followed up as Mark Allott's shot was parried by the 'keeper but his cross shot was a whisker away at the far post.
Crewe rattled Tommy Lee's bar with a cracking shot that the Spireites keeper was thankful to collect under pressure.
Open game, end to end stuff, it's anyone's at this stage.
Drew Talbot scores for Chesterfield despite the efforts of the Crewe 'keeper to keep it out after 27 minutes.
A pulsating first-half with the Spireites edging on top and looking good value for their half-time lead.
Half-time: Railwaymen 0 Spireites 1
No changes at half-time as the second half gets underway to chants of 'Spireites 'til I die' coming from the 294 away supporters in a crowd of 3278..
A mistake at the back by Crewe let in Barry Conlon but he fired wildly over the bar.
As Crewe up their efforts to get back into the match the game lacks some of the fluency enjoyed in the first half.
Conlon set up Green to rifle in a fierce goalbound shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection on its way but the 'keeper brought off a save at full stretch to deny the Spireites.
Whaley found Conlon in space at the far post but he was marginally off-side as his header went just wide of the upright.
A loud cheer from the away supporters when Whaley's shot found the side netting but it may have looked as if itwas in the net for the Spireites fans sat on the opposite side of the ground.
A Whaley free-kick dead central in the D cannoned off the Crewe defensive wall as Chesterfield start to dominate.
Conlon and Green combined in the box at the end of another useful move by the Spireites but the 'keeper was quick to grab the ball.
So far a classy performance by the Spireites and with full coverage by any radio station it's hard to understand why more supporters don't sign up for Spireites Player.
Sixth victory on the bounce for the Spireties, a privilege to see it.
