Match referee Dave Phillips made two inspections of the Saltergate pitch.  First a very thorough inspection took place at 10.45am and he then asked for the pitch covers to be removed and for a couple of areas to be given special attention by the groundstaff.

After a second pitch inspection at 12 noon the referee declared that the pitch was playable and the match could go ahead.

The current Football League protocol urges each football club to take account of the needs of fans as well as the opposition concerning severe weather conditions.  Getting the balance right is the key, as the decision needs to be taken at a time that gives the pitch the best chance of being declared fit but not so late so as to avoid any wasted journeys.

The club has made every attempt to keep fans informed via the national media and the club's own website and telephone messaging service.

Congratulations to the hard working groundstaff, supplemented by some willing volunteers which included manager John Sheridan and club secretary Alan Walters, whose efforts have ensured the game goes ahead.
