The first signs that Chesterfield are preparing to leave Saltergate have begun with the installation of an expanded commercial department at the ground.

The new double-decker cabin at the main entrance on St Margarets Drive means a doubling in size for the club shop, plus new offices and storage.

It will provide the extra space needed to launch a new range of 'End of an Era' branded merchandise.

Chesterfield has been located at Saltergate since 1871 so to move to a new stadium is very much an historic event in the life of the club.

Commemorative items celebrating the history of the country's fourth oldest football club and initiatives to help fans transfer their allegiance to the new stadium will be launched in the new future.

Spireites marketing consultant Alan Stevenson said: "Whilst a lot of attention has been focused on the facilities available at the new stadium, leaving the club's existing ground needs to be managed with dignity and by recognising all the happy memories that supporters and their families will have."

He added:  "In the near future we plan to launch our 'End of an Era' initiative so we can not only start celebrating the past but also start looking forward to an exciting future in a new stadium."

The new cabin has been provided by local firm Kyoob Space, located at Barlborough Links, one of the first local businesses to get the chance to tender for work associated with the ground move.

Kyoob Space commercial director Gino Travaglione, who lives at Walton and has supported Chesterfield for the last 30 years, said: "We are delighted that the football club has already recognised that local businesses in the town can benefit from the extra work that will arise from the stadium move."

Stadium project update: Enabling work has already started at the site of Chesterfield's planned new stadium at Whittington Moor as site owner Wilson Bowden Developments prepares the site for the major development.

The first works include diverting a major power cable around the perimeter of site and relocating a major sewage pipe that currently runs immediately under the site of the football stadium.

This will soon be followed by further works to put in road access and principle infrastructure on the site before construction, which is expected to begin early 2009 with both the new Tesco store and the 10,500 seater football stadium proceeding at the same time.
