GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 2 SPIREITES 1
Jack Lester gave the Spireites a deserved lead before goals by Gareth Davies and an Ian Ross freekick gave Trinity the win.
Chesterfield's opening pre-season fixture took place on a perfect pitch at Blue Square North side Gainsborough Trinity. The Spireites started brightly with Jamie Lowry firing wide before Jack Lester finished off a tidy move started by Darren Currie and eased on by Jamie Ward. The goal came after just 6 minutes and for 20 or so minutes, Lee Richardson's side dominated.
With Currie, Rob Page, Kevin Austin and Paul Harsley in the starting eleven in front of triallist keeper David Knight, the League Two side saw Currie stroke the ball just wide after a delightful dink by Gregor Robertson and a cheeky flick on by Lester.
With David Reeves and Steve Blatherwick responding positively to requests to 'Give us a Wave' by the travelling fans, all looked rosy and Trinity were restricted to long range shots, generally well off target.
Austin headed over from a corner, Ward saw keeper Adam Sollitt make a great close range block after a defence splitting Page pass and Ward went on a mazy run but shot just wide as half-time approached.
The sxpected glut of substitutions didn't happen at the break as Chesterfield re-started with the same eleven but Gareth Davies came on for the home side and within 90 seconds he'd equalised against his home town club, though his 20 yard grubber did take a massive deflection.
The subs started to appear on 58, Lloyd Kerry and Jamie Winter were first on, along with triallist Lassana Sidibe, younger brother of Stoke's Mamady. Scott Boden, a triallist from the Sheffield UNited academy came on along with Bruce Dyer, also on trial after his short spell at the end of last season.
Sidibe saw Sollitt save well after a Jamie Winter pass and Kerry saw a shot bounce out from the inside of the post before Ben Algar replaced Currie.
Ryan Mallon chipped over for the hosts just before Reeves took to the field to great applause ahead of Danny Hall and Aaron Downes coming on, to be followed by Dan Gray and Dan Whatsize.
Trinity won the game with a direct free kick goal from Ian Ross in the final minute.
A decent fitness warm up with Lowry, Page and Austin looking the early eye catchers.
