Bury boss Alan Knill has revealed how a spell at Chesterfield has improved him as a manager following his recent success at Gigg Lane.

Last month, Knill left his post as Spireites' assistant manager to take the helm at Gigg Lane, where as a player he made 159 appearances between 1989 and 1993.

Knill - who has guided the club to three wins in their last four games - had previously worked at Rotherham as manager.

He said: "I wasn't too happy about the way it ended at Rotherham but I went to Chesterfield as assistant and worked for a really good manager in Lee Richardson.

"He let me coach the players and it gave me a bit of a breather from management.

"It allowed me to think about where I had maybe gone wrong at Rotherham and how I could improve - and that's definitely helped me at Bury."
