DEMOLITION OF FORMER DEMAGLASS SITE CHIMNEYS

 

A major local landmark will disappear in a cloud of smoke on Sunday, August 20 when the two chimneys on the former Demaglass works at Lockoford Lane, Chesterfield will be demolished by explosion.

 

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Trudi Mulcaster will press the plunger at 8.30am. 

 

Site owners and developers, Wilson Bowden Developments Ltd will be arranging a small public viewing area on Lockoford Lane. 

 

No public viewing will be available from Sheffield Road or the A61.

ROAD CLOSURES

 

In the interests of safety the following road closures will be in place over the weekend:

 

Lockoford Road between the A61 roundabout and the Sheffield Road roundabout from 10pm on Saturday, August 19.

 

The Inner Relief Road (A61) between Whittington Moor (Sheffield Road/Brimington Road North) roundabout and the Horns Bridge roundabout from approximately 7:45am on Sunday August 20.  This includes the Tesco roundabout between the two roundabouts already mentioned.

 

A619 Rother Way from the Tesco roundabout to the Sainsburys roundabout.

 

Sheffield Road (B6057) between Peveril Road and Stand Road.

 

All roads affected by these closures will be re-opened as soon as reasonably possible after the demolition has taken place.

 

FUTURE PLANS

 

Wilson Bowden Developments Ltd are currently in pre-planning application discussions with Chesterfield Borough Council in relation to the former Demaglass site and it is anticipated that a planning application for a mixed use scheme will be submitted during autumn 2006 following a period of public consultation.

 

The proposals are to include a new home for Chesterfield Football Club who are in discussions with the developers regarding re-location from their existing Saltergate site.

Commenting on the demoliton, Neil Hartley, Development Director of Wilson Bowden Developments Ltd, said: "The disappearance of the two chimneys will mark an important stage in the regeneration of the site, which has changed remarkably over the demolition process during the last few months."

 

"The site represents a major investment for the company and for the future of Chesterfield." 

 

The development proposals due to be unveiled in the autumn will mark the start of the regeneration of the River Rother Corrider, which is a key objective in Chesterfield Borough Council's strategy for the redevelopment of the town."
