The Spireites made two changes that won against Accrington on Saturday with Drew Talbot in for the rested Wade Small and new loan signing Mark Little slotting in at right back for Phil Picken who dropped to the bench. Huddersfield made a number of changes as manager Lee Clark looked to find a winning formula by giving most of his squad a game. Huddersfield having never lost to the Spireites in a cup game.

Early exchanges were cancelled out by both sides, there was a diving stop by former Terrier Rob Page from Jordan Rhodes effort which went wide for the first corner of the match. On 12 referee Scott Mathieson spoke to John Sheridan after the latter was complaining about an offside decision not given much to the annoyance of the Main Stand. On 18 minutes Anthony Pilkington shot wide from distance with a slight deflection from Ian Breckin but nothing came of the corner.

Chesterfield were seeing little of the ball as Huddersfield showed their division higher advantage. A neat interchange of passes between Lowry and Lester enabled Talbot to fire over the bar. On 30 Lester appeared to get an elbow in the face from Goodwin but the referee saw fit to play on. A Jordan Rhodes shot from deep was enough to worry Lee as Huddersfield looked more threatening. Gregor Robertson seemed to take a knock which took the wind out of sails and moments later he was replaced by Phil Picken, Gregor received warm applause from the Kop end as he made his way to the dug-out.

On 42 Huddersfield hit the post with a header from Rhodes from a Pilkington free kick from the resulting corner Butlers header went over the bar.

On 49 Chesterfield attacked down the left through Picken and a cross not dealt with saw Little with an effort which went wide. The Spireites started the brighter of the two teams using Talbot and Mcdermott effectively on the flanks. The Terriers struck back though with a Collins shot which hit the post after good work by Kay. Collins again went close with a long range effort which had Lee disturbed.

On 56 though jinking work by Donal Mcdermott down the left saw a wonderful cross headed in by DREW TALBOT which was the Spireites first headed goal since Aaron Downes away at Port Vale in December and Talbots third of the season. Minutes later and Hudders struck back with a goal from Pilkington following a Lee save from Rhodes. Chesterfield were then restricted to long range efforts from Mcdermott and Allott which both went wide. Huddersfield then made a substitution with Ainsworth replacing Collins.

Chesterfield re-took the lead on 73 with Lowry and Little linking up well to cross for TALBOT again to grab his fourth of the season (all in this competition) to make it 2-1. Talbot was having an immense game at one stage leaving James Berrett on his backside as the former Wednesday player attacked down the left. Again though Huddersfield wouldn't lie down and efforts from Pilkington and Kay his effort wonderfully saved by Tommy Lee saw the Terriers getting closer.

On 79 Lee Novak replaced Gary Roberts, a Mcdermott pass on 80 set up Lester who's shot was saved by Smithies. On 83 the Spireites made a double substitution with Derek Niven and Drew Talbot replaced by Dan Gray and Jordan Bowery. Frustration crept in for Berrett as he hacked down the menacing Mcdermott in the centre circle and the young man was shown a violent Yellow from Scott Matheison who's performance now was bordering on encore. On 88 though the Spireites looked to have sealed it after Jim Goodwin made a howler in the box and JORDAN BOWERY slotted home for his first ever senior goal for Chesterfield low into the corner. Some Huddersfield supporters chose to leave at this point sodden and disappointed no doubt.

The referee then signalled three minutes of additional time.

Jordan Bowery set off on mazy run on the left hand side but couldn't find Lester lurking in the middle. Mark Little then made a great challenge which was bizarrely adjudged to have been a foul and that set up Anthony Pilkington to launch a fine strike which zipped off the surface to bring the game to 3-2. Moments later and the game was turned on its head as a cross came in and Tommy Lee dropped it under pressure for the ball to hit a defender on the line to be placed to Nathan Clarke to lash it home to send the remaining Hudders fans in raptures and the Spireites supporters despondent. Robbie Williams then replaced Joe Skarz well over the limited time the ref had decided upon. Seconds later it was all over and 3-3, but it wasn't all over as this comp decides that Penalties is the best option and to the Cross Street End we went.

1. Anthony Pilkington (HTFC) missed sent the ball over the bar 0-0

2. Jamie Lowry (CFC) struck the ball down the middle 1-0

3. Robbie Williams (HTFC) top left of goal 1-1

4. Jack Lester (CFC) calmly chipped down the middle 2-1

5. Jim Goodwin (HTFC) saved by lee to his right 2-1

6. Dan Gray (CFC) sent keeper wrong way 3-1

7. Anthony Kay (HTFC) sent lee the wrong way to left 3-2

8. Donal Mcdermott (CFC) sent keeper wrong way 4-2

CFC win 4-2 on pens

How Scott Mathieson found just under six minutes of extra time is nigh on impractical but he's been involved in some crackerjack of matches whilst officiating the Spireites so this one had to be up there. Both sides played far too much open football for my liking but for the deals offered by the Club for this venture what a better way to spend your £12/£10/£1 etc. As the rain lashed down the effort from both sides who quite clearly wanted to put on a show was commendable. It does nothing for your heart but it puts us into the next round and the Northern Area Quarter Final.
