Chesterfield wet out to name an unchanged line-up from the side that beat Bournemouth last week but an injury to Peter Till in the warm-up caused Alan Goodall to replace him. The Spireites' latest loan signing, midfielder Lewis Montrose, started on the bench.
Both sides started in a low gear and remained stuck in that for much of the game. Barnet won the game's first corner on 13 after Downes beat Adomah to the ball; Deverdics' cross found Bishop left in space on the edge of our box, but he shot wastefully over. A Deverdics free kick from inside Chesterfield's half on 16 flashed through a crowd to Lee; any sort of deflection would have seen it in the net.
The home side came close 19. Winter won the ball well, regained his poise and found Gritton, who laid it off to Lester. The offside trap was sprung - a rare enough feat, in itself - but the ball was cleared for a corner. Winter's flag kick was cleared.
A Lockwood shot on 23 was tipped over by Lee. Attacking the near post on 28 at a Chesterfield corner, Downes fought through defenders to win a clear effort with his head, but the ball flashed wide.
A Barnet corner on 31 was sent through the back to Breen, who took shot, but Lee got over well at the his back post to beat the ball away. From the other side, Deverdics' corner again came through to Breen after a defending player mis-kicked; this time he laid a measured pass at the feet of Yakubu who rolled the ball home to give Barnet the lead.
Chesterfield were given a free kick just outside the box on 38 when Lester was fouled by Yakubu. Jack took the kick himself and forced Harrison into a good save. A late flurry of Chesterfield corners produced little threat to the Barnet goal, despite some confusion between Harrison and his defenders.
Halftime: 0-1.
Furlong gave away a free kick just outside his own box on 54 but Winter's drive from Lester's pass lacked fizz and went wide. Hall was booked for deliberate handball and Lockwood soon followed for tripping Talbot. Winter was taken off after 58 after a clash with Bishop left him with a bad cut near the eye; Montrose came on for his first action in a blue shirt. He was very nearly booked before touching the ball, when Deverdics made a bit of a banquet out of a challenge. Talbot was generous with applause for Deverdics' effort and the referee saw it for what it was.
Currie came on for Goodall after 65 as the home side sought a spark. A Gray throw was met by the head of Deverdics and his looping effort cleared his own keeper, but didn't drop before going over the bar. Currie was involved in good build-up on 24 and Lester rounded the move off by tapping home, but the linesman's flag denied him.
Downes extravagantly sliced a cross straight into the hands of Lee on 72 and Montrose announced his arrival a minute later with a thundering 30-yard drive that the flying Harrison managed to beat round the post. Downes headed the ball back into the mixer from the Currie corner and HALL popped up to force the equaliser home.
Lloyd Kerry broke through on 76 but Harrison came out decisively to force the midfielder into a weak effort.Mark Hughes replaced Deverdics on 79. Lockwood struck a free kick and it appeared to go under the wall before squeezing wide. Akurang replaced O'Flynn with four minutes left; Barnet had cheerfully settled for the draw by then, and the home team seemed unable to summon up the inspiration to push persuasively for the win.
Full-time: 1-1. Attendance 3068 (126 from Barnet.)
