Chesterfield made one change from the eleven beaten at Rochdale last Saturday, bringing the fit-again Jack Lester back for the suspended Jamie Ward. Val Teixeira started his Chesterfield career on the bench. With Gregor Robertson in on left midfield, Darren Currie was given a right-midfield spot.

A free kick to Brentford in a dangerous place in the opening minute probably caused more than a few Blues fans to swallow hard in anticipation, but Downes got a good connection and when Poole returned it, Carson came to claim easily. Still, Chesterfield managed to concede early on - their fourth this season from a set-piece within the first seven minutes of a game. A corner was lifted in to the near post where BEAN found space to measure a flick-on past Carson and into the net.

Carson pulled off as good save with his legs on 10 to deny Elder an extension to his side's lead. Austin had tried to shepherd the ball out, but was rushed into an error. It needed a good recovery tackle from Downes to prevent Macdonald from getting clean away on 13, as the Bees enjoyed clearly the better of the opening quarter.

Chesterfield began to assert themselves a little more on 20 minutes. Lester turned well on the goal-line but was tackled; Currie skittled the corner through the box and Winter shot narrowly wide. Lester was brought down on the edge of the area and Goodall's rising free kick bashed the crossbar on its way over. Niven had a shot deflected for a corner before Brentford came back, Macdonald hitting the bar with a header as the half closed.

Halftime: 0-1 (Only one CFC goal in the first half in League games this season!)

The Spireites had to start the second half pressing fell down quickly, as Brentford kept the ball for the first couple of minutes or so, winning a couple of corners, while Winter was booked for a foul on Bean. Winter drove a shot wide from 25 on 52.

Jamie Lowry replaced Robertson on 55 but lasted only twenty seconds or so before being barged off the field by a challenge from James Wilson. Several Chesterfield players tried to talk to Wilson and show there displeasure to his challange and the referee emerged from the resulting melee to wave only a yellow card at Wilson.

While Lowry was strapped into a neck brace and onto a stretcher, play continued, with Val Teixeira coming on for his first start in English football. Elder was booked for persistent fouling on 61, and Austin went into the book on 68, for a foul on Elder. Elder was losing it, a bit, and the ref twice had to involve his skipper in efforts to calm him down. In the end, Bees manager Andy Scott wisely took him off, before he was sent off. Ademola replaced him on 73.

Jamie Winter brought roars of approval from the crowd on 76, when his thirty-five yard pliedrive was batted out by Hamer, in the Brentford goal, for a corner.

Half-chances fell to the home side as they continued to press; Austin saw one flash wide off his legs at the back post, and a driven cross from Teixeira was chested at the goal from close range by Lester, but Hamer was there to save. Harsley replaced the tiring Boden on 78. Teixeira placed a free kick on 84 but it clipped the wall and went out for a corner. As the game fizzled out Lester went into the book for dissent, in injury time.

Attendance: 3188 (323 visitors).
