MOVING ON. . .

Posted on: Mon 11 Jul 2005

The summer will certainly be the busiest time of the season for player movement, now that the EUFA-imposed transfer windows are upon us. Ex-Spireites have featured in a number of moves on and off the field, to date.

sMark Hudson has ended up at Huddersfield, so we'll see him again next season, after all. Bill Green (pictured) has joined Wigan Athletic as their "Football Co-ordinator," a title once held by the late Frank Lord, whose recent death was reported on this website. The ex-Spireite contingent on Nottingham Forest's backroom staff now numbers fthree, with Andy Beasley (Goalkeeping coach) joining Youth Team Coach Alan Crawford and Assistant Manager Frank Barlow. Let's hope Andy gets someone else in on the day the keepers do "rushing out to save at your own defender's feet!"

Charlie Williamson left his post as Alfreton's Assistant Manager when David Lloyd left, although ex-Boss Dave Rushbury is still there in his officially entitled "Director of Football" role. John Clayton has been coaching Bristol City's under-18s and John Cooke will be looking forward to operating the washing machines of the Premiership as Sunderland's kit man. Billy McEwan succeeded Viv Busby as Manager of York City last February.

Warren Hawke retired from playing for Greenock Morton this summer and joined the Scottish PFA as an Education Officer.Jon Howard's Old Trafford shot was well over the continuous white line but hopefully his car isn't, now that he's taken up being a driving instructor.

Paul Barnes has returned to the area to join Alfreton Town: Bryn Gunn is one of two new Assistant Managers at Desborough Town. Junior McDougald has joined Kettering Town from Canvey Island. Craig Wilding has moved from Stafford Rangers to Reditch United.

Ben Cressey left us last summer and was recently a member of Sheffield Club's Sheffield Senior Cup winning side. Mark Gayle is a player/coach at Tamworth, and also works with Birmingham City's goalkeepers. Stuart Howson left Droylsden in the summer for Lancaster City; Colin "Olive" Hoyle joined Ilkeston just before the season ended and Graham Hyde left Bristol Rovers for Worcester City.

Away from football, Tony Lormor (right) is a postman. Steve Payne has left Macc, returned to his former trade as a carpenter and joined Northwich Victoria. Chris Perkins packed up playing towards the end of last season and is now among the ranks of ex-pros who combine a day job and do the Press Association stats at matches,

Former loanee Stefan Moore has joined QPR on a three-year contract, teaming up with Ian Evatt, of course. Thomas Hitzlsperger has left Villa for VfB Stuttgart, in the Bundeslega.

Danny Williams is among the recent movers, leaving Hereford for Stevenage Borough. Anyone who watched the FA Trophy final on telly will have seen Chris Timons and Mark Smith pick up losers' medals for Hucknall Town. Mike Simpkins has recently joined Worksop Town. David Reeves' contract at Scarborough has run out; he has left his coaching role at Swindon and intends to build up a coaching school.

In a peculiar shift of fortunes Ian Breckin left Wigan for Nottingham Forest a day or two before another ex-Miller and ex-Spireite, Mike Pollitt, moved into the JJB for Premiership football at the age of 34! Sean Dyche (left) has left Watford for Northampton and Tom Curtis has joined the Mansfield ex-professionals XI at Chester City.

Of those who left us last season, we've heard nothing yet about Jordan Fowler (released by Arsenal), Jamie McMaster or Kevin Dawson. Mark Innes has been offered a contract at Port Vale.

Apart from the reported demise of Frank Lord, two more players from the past have passed on: Tom Walker, a winger in Newcastle's cup-winning sides of the early 1950s, died in Middleton, Lancs, recently. He joined us for a few months in 1957, either side of spells at Oldham, and played 14 times, scoring once. Nelson Everard Stiffle, to give him his glorious full name, passed away in Australia in April; born in India, he was the first player of Asian descent to represent Chesterfield, playing 38 times on the right wing and scoring nine goals in the 1934-5 season. We extend our sympathies to the families of these men.

Email us if you hear of any more!
