Chesterfield FC welcomed visitors from Chesterfield's German twin town, Darmstadt, to the Exeter game.
Wolfgang Knöß, is the General Manager of SV Darmstadt 98, Darmstadt's football club and last January Wolfgang and three friends paid us a visit when we'd almost forgot how to win. Prior to the game, during a visit to the Town Hall, it was jokingly suggested that we'd win 4-0 one for each of our guests - and the outcome ? A fantastic televised trouncing of Hereford by 4-0.
This year one extra visitor made the journey to Saltergate, during German football's winter break... but surely a 5-0 score line was implausible....and so it proved as the Spireites completed a great win double over the Grecians to clinch just Chesterfield's 5th home win of the season (ok one in the FA Cup!) and their first at Saltergate for three months.
Wolfgang and friends thoroughly enjoyed the evening, particularly the almost unique atmosphere that Saltergate can create on a cold winter's night; they stood on the kop and Wolfgang felt that he could actually "smell football".
Without doubt the Hereford game last season was the highlight of the home calendar and last night the team oozed class as they purred their way to three precious points....maybe we need a sponsor to fund a few more visits from our twin town visitors.
After the game Paul Fisher interviewed Wolfgang and it's great to hear such a positive perspective.
