The Devine Collection
The nephew of the former Celtic and Scotland man Joe Cassidy, Joe Devine joined Chesterfield in 1937 from Birmingham.

Here is Joe, next to the back, with the new men in Chesterfield's 1937-8 squad.

Here are the new men again. From the left: James, Sullivan, unknown, Wright, Milburn, Ramage, Spedding and Devine.

Joe broke his leg at Spurs in 1938 and the injury effectively ended his career. Visiting him in hosptial are George Milburn, Peter Ramage, Allan Sliman and Harry Clifton.

Joe became an effective coach after recovering from his injury. This photo is as interesting for the detail of the new stand behind - note that the small enclosure has yet to be dug out.

Joe and Ollie Thompson were both on the coaching staff either side of World War Two.

Joe welcomes his fellow-countryman Tom Lyon to Chesterfield after his transfer from Blackpool in 1938.

A peculiar one to finish with. Players Johnny Carey and Frank Swift sit either side of the FA Cup. Among the onlookers are CFC officials Dan Newton (in the glasses) and Harold Shentall (third from right). Was the cup brought here during our run to the fifth round in 1938?
