BILLIE BAGS WINNER

Posted on: Thu 01 Feb 2007

GirlsBillie Gordon notched the winner and the only goal of the game ten minutes from the end of a riveting contest against Ipswich Town. Both sides played some attractive football in the first period but defences were on top in what became a hard fought contest with Chesterfield's Laura O Neill and Kashlie Johnson putting in some timely challenges to keep the home defence intact. Laura O Neill made a surging room from the back at the start of the 2nd period but was unable to beat the keeper with a tame shot from just outside the area. Fellow central defender Johnson nearly went one better when latching onto a rebound she hit a screaming drive from 20 yards which the Ipswich keeper could only watch squeeze inches pat the post.

The reporter witnessed one of the best saves seen at this level of football when deep into  the 3rd period  the Ipswich striker hit a thunderous angled drive from 15 yards, Spireites keeper Sophie Baggley dived upwards and diverted the effort over the cross bar.

Both keepers were in top form and it was the turn of the Ipswich No 1 to keep the game scoreless when in the 60th minute the impressive Lauren Powell and Emily Montgomery exchanged a neat interchange of passes and then engineered a great chance for Billie Gordon who hit a terrific shot which the Ipswich keeper saved with a great dive to her right.

Lauren Powell was having a terrific game and it was her drive and ambition which created the winning goal, surging past two players she hit a powerful low drive from 20 yards which the keeper could only parry onto the right boot of Billie Gordon who gleefully tapped home from 5 yards.

It was tough on Ipswich who worked hard but no one could deny the Chesterfield Girls another successful outing with everyone playing their part in an excellent game of football which was competitive and physical but played in a good spirit

Chesterfield under 16's had not played a competitive match since their fine victory against Notts County in December and their lack of match practice was evident as they stuttered to a 4-0 half time deficit against Ipswich Town.

The Blues improved in the second period but not enough to prevent the concession of four more goals, Kirsty Gibson finally managed to put Chesterfield on the score sheet tucking away a penalty after Jade Boulton was fouled in the area.

Ipswich were the better side on the day with their superior fitness being the main difference between the 2 sides.

The under 14's approach play was again very good but they failed to find a cutting edge up front where as Ipswich took their chances in a 3-0 victory for the home side
