Tommy: It’s a big game

Posted on: Mon 03 May 2010

Tommy Wright spoke to Spireites Player ahead of Saturday's trip to the Crown Ground Accrington, Tommy told Player "If you look at the League table we still have a good chance of making the play off's that's despite only winning one in the last ten. In one way we have been fortunate still to have a chance, but it's about time we took it. I watched Accrington beat Barnet in midweek, the pitch isn't the greatest but they deserved to win. A couple of their players went off injured, so it will be interesting to see who they will have available. We also have a few players with slight bumps and bruises and a couple haven't trained much this week. So we will be leaving it late to decide on our starting line up.

Looking ahead to the game and also reflecting back on the season Tommy continued "It's a big game and we have spoken many times this season about mental strength and giving it your best and being consistent. Only the top three have been consistent. We have been as good as anybody at times and on other days as bad as anybody and that's the biggest problem.

We have looked a very good team at times but we have also lost key players through injury that can happen. But really we have conceded far too many goals and conceded poor goals at times and that's the difference. The teams that have been promoted have ground out draws and wins when not playing well when we haven't played well we got beat. Even when we had six wins on the trot we weren't playing well but we defended well and perhaps had some luck. In the last few matches we haven't had much luck and also some poor refereeing decision have gone against us recently. We scored at Macclesfield which as been highlighted on national TV and decisions last week and I feel we have been unfortunate at times.

But it's along season and hopefully we will get that bit of luck again and hopefully we can win games. Everyones the same the lower down the leagues the more inconsistent the players can be and they have to be up for the game be physical and mentally strong and hopefully our extra quality we have will see us through. The last day will interesting alot of the teams chasing the play off's play each other and for the first time for a few years Chesterfield will have something to play for on the last day of the season."
