John: We have to keep believing

Posted on: Wed 21 Apr 2010

A very downbeat John Sheridan spoke to Spireites Player after seeing his side slip out of the play off spots for the first time since the end of January.John told Player "The manner of the goals again leaves me bewildered and puzzled really. People get instructions not to give them cheap throw ins and we came unstuck. They got plenty of bodies in there but the goals are soft. We appear to lack leaders and I don't see it times and I am very disappointed and I thought the game was there to won. But you can't keep coming back from two nil down.

I think we do lack leadership and I expect a lot more from the experienced players. You expect the youngsters to make the odd mistake but again we didn't get going in the first half. I put a team out that I thought could have won the game which could have taken us up to fourth in the League. I think all the players have played a part and are good enough. But only one or two showed me any desire,  enthusiasm and will to win today .Again we didn't start playing to we were two down, but we had the three best chances of the match from Kev Austin, Jordan Bowery and Jack. I couldn't really see if Jordan's chance was over the line or not but it doesn't surprise me if it was and wasn't given. But our first half performance wasn't good enough and we didn't deserve to win the game.

John continued and is clearly frustrated by his side "I am very frustrated and I thought we were very flat and we have a chance to get out the league. I can only talk it's about the players once they walk over the white line.  But I will look at myself did I pick the right team though obviously if you lose then I haven't picked the right team. I understand everyone's frustrations, I am disheartened but will accept the criticism. I want what the fans want and I want the team winning football matches and Chesterfield out of this division and I will work damn hard to achieve that, and there are still three games to go.

I don't think we have played well at all over the last eight matches or so and our points tally doesn't add up to what we should be getting. I hope that dropping out of the top seven gives us the kick up the backside to get back in there. We have let ourselves down and squandered opportunities but we have to keep believing.
