An apologetic and a very downbeat John Sheridan spoke to Spireites Player after seeing his side suffer a heavy five nil defeat against a rampant Port Vale side
John told Player "I hold my hands up and I apologise and I fully understand the supporters reaction. We all want the same thing and the performance today was upsetting because it was an opportunity to get into the top three. We looked like a team that wasn't ready and we looked very flat and for some reason this is happening at home more than it does away. In the last two or three home games we haven't been a threat and our performances haven't been good enough simple as."
John then was asked about Adam Rundle's miss just before the break that would have levelled things and John continued "If Adam had equalised it might have been a different game. But other than that we really didn't deserve anything out of the game they were better than us in every area of the pitch and that's the first time I have said that this season. I have praised the player's performances against Cheltenham and Notts County and I am stuck for words today. Sometimes you can accept losing but you can't accept losing five nil at home and it will be a long week. We have ten games left and the players will be in tomorrow to watch the video and hopefully we will learn from that. Its my job to pick the players back up again for next weekend."
John then covered off the field details with the injury to Derek Niven and the future of loan striker Gary Madine at Saltergate. John added "Derek Niven got a swollen ankle so couldn't really continue. I will also be speaking to Gary Madine to see what the situation is, he's had an ankle injury so not played as much as he would have liked but I have to make sure we are ready for next saturday ."
Finally again John apologised to the supporters and concluded the interview by saying "Again I can only apologise to the fans because we shouldn't be getting beat five nil and we shouldn't be putting in performance like we did. I have to accept the criticism and shouts from the crowd today and its now up to me to make sure the players bounce back."
