John: It was a great effort
A pleased John Sheridan spoke to Spireites Player after seeing the supporters and ground staff efforts to beat the elements rewarded with a 1-0 win against Torquay United
John told Player "It was a great effort from everybody from the fans who helped to get the game on with the ground staff right through to the players. "
Moving to the game itself John continued "There was a lot effort from both sides and they are a decent side. I want a few more results like todays where we ground out the result with a injury hit team. I thought we were the better team first half though they hit the post, so we had a bit of luck which we haven't had much of at times. But first half I thought we moved the ball well and created the better chances.
At half time I told the players to keep going and just relax a bit. We got the goal and then held on. We had a number of players out there who haven't played much first team football this season, Goodall, Gray,Green and Conlon all looked tired towards the end. I thought Dominic Green did very well for his first game and again we had a bit of luck when Dan Gary miss controlled and Hally cleared one off the line. But the three points was the most important thing from what was a tight game. I don't see them finishing in the bottom half if they continue to play like they did today.
John was then was asked about the injuries John replied "Trainings been difficult and we have picked up a few strains and knocks from the different surfaces we have used. We lost Brecks today and Picken was sore following yesterdays training. So I had around nine regulars missing so credit to the players that have come in"
John was then asked about the late recruitment of Dominic Green from Peterborough and Barry Conlon from Grimsby Town and John replied "I know I have got Scott, Drew, Smally and Jack but Barry just gives us something different, he's aggressive and a threat plus he knows this division. I am still after another wideman and I remembered Dominic from last season he where he played against Oldham for Peterborough. He's a young lad who gets crosses in early and he really can only get better.
I still need to bring in some more players because we have to improve on our first half of the season. I am greedy and want more than the play offs and to get out of the division as quickly as possible. Today was an important win and I am fed up with managers telling me we are the best team they have played and yet we have lost the game. I want a few managers to say Chesterfield were lucky and we have got the three points."
