John: We deserved something

Posted on: Fri 04 Dec 2009

John Sheridan was clearly disappointed to see the Spireites unbeaten home record go against Dario Gradis Crewe side but he was taking a lot positives though from the game.

John told Player "It's disappointing to have the lost the game but I can take a lot of positives from it. We created a lot of opportunities and it could have been 8-5 or something like that both teams had a threat and we deserved something out of the game. If we had scored the two penalties the outcome of the game we have been totally different. But credit to the players they kept going and showed a lot of character and we will win more games than we lose if we show the same commitment and attitude.

On the missed spot kicks John told Player "No one is nominated to take the penalties at the moment both players wanted to take them. The kicks were on target and if the keeper had dived the other way they would have been great penalties. It was still 0-0 and we played some decent football and created opportunities. It's important that we work hard as a team and we have to work out how to keep clean sheets because we can't keep expecting to score three goals to win a football match"

John was then asked naturally about his sides porous defending and he continued

"It would be nice to keep a clean sheet occasionally and we have to improve on that. So we are all a disappointed and a frustrating night. The third goal really took the game away from us because we were right back in it with twelve minutes to go and looked like deservedly getting something from the game."

Finally John was asked about the team selection and the inclusion of both new loan players Ian Morris and Davide Somma in the starting line up and John added

"I just went with a gut instinct and it was unfair on Talbot and Picken because they didn't really deserve to miss out. It's great if it works, but its all about scoring the first goal and if we had gone two nil up it would have been a different result. But we now have to pick ourselves up and we have a tough game at Aldershot on Saturday."
