John: Want to get off to a good start

Posted on: Mon 10 Aug 2009

John Sheridan spoke to Spireite Player before setting off to Torquay on Friday afternoon. John started off by giving the team news with a couple of players missing out with injury and of course Jack Lester missing through suspension. John told Player

"We are expecting a very tough game and it's now the most important game. We have had a decent pre-season but we have picked up a few injuries.  Both Alan Goodall and Gregor Robertson are both out. Gregor banged his hip on Wednesday and Alan has not recovered from the knock at Matlock. But that's life and we have to get on with it, player's that are injured or suspended are no good to me. So the players that come in can do a job and hopefully get us a result at Torquay.

The Spireite squad though has been bolstered by the loan signing of left winger Donal McDermott from Manchester City and John continued

"We have signed left winger Donal McDermott from Man City.  He's a very exciting player in my eyes and we have fought hard to get him here. He was on loan at Mk Don's last season and I am very pleased to get him.  Donal's fit and ready and assuming everything's sorted out he will be in the squad for tomorrow."

John also briefly talked about Torquay United but remained focused on his own squad and revealed that Rob Page will start against the Gulls and added

"It will be a very tough game and they have just come out of a promotion run so they will be confident but my main concern is how we are going to play.  All the players have tried to impress me and the likes of Rob Page who weren't involved that much last season will start the game tomorrow. The attitudes  throughout the squads been spot on so there will be some disappointment and I would still like to bring in one or two more of my own signings in.

Last season Chesterfield had some very good results but weren't consistent enough and therefore finished tenth. My aim is to get out of the division I don't mind putting pressure on my myself and that's why I want to get out of the division and start life at the new ground in League One.  But to do that our home form will be vital and we have to win our home games and then if we maintain the away form from last season and then we will do alright.
