Lee: I have got to accept responsibility
Lee Richardson gave a lengthy Spireites World Bradford City preview and Lee started by looking ahead to the game and said
"The games really an anti climax for both clubs after missing out on promotion and the play off's . I spoke to Stuart around a month ago and we talked about perhaps both Clubs needing a point to clinch promotion or the play offs. So it's a massive disappointment to miss out.
I have got to accept responsibility for some of the points lost along the way. I calculate twenty lost points, which I think is a fair reflection in games where we have been in front and conceded goals in the last six minutes has cost us thirteen points. You can then add on another seven points which we lost in injury time. So if we had those seven points we would be in the play off's.
It's all if and buts and I actually think we weren't a million miles away and a lot closer this season than last. Sure the points are less but three weeks ago we were actually in a play-off spot. Yes we aren't now and everyone feels frustrated and there is a huge sense of anti -climax. So Saturday's game is a bit of a damp squib but it gives us a chance to put the season to bed."
Lee then went onto to cover the team news and added "We have a long injury / doubtful list obviously Jack Lester's suspended. Aaron Downes, Lloyd Kerry, Danny Hall are all injured whilst Drew Talbot and Jamie Winter are doubtful. So there is an opportunity for some of the younger players to have ago and for those who have been on the fringe of things to finish the season on a high."
Lee then reflected in a frank and honest way on his time at Saltergate and on his hopes to be Chesterfield's manager next season. Lee continued. "The nature of football these days is radio stations and websites thrive on the managers position and they are responsible for success and failure. Rightly or wrongly I have said often mangers aren't to blame when it goes wrong nor should they take all the credit when things go right.
I just hope that when the Chairman and board sit down and decide if they want to offer myself and my staff a new contract that they do reflect on the two seasons with a clear head and recognise that, whilst we are all disappointed on not going back to league one with Brentford, other clubs have struggled. Shrewsbury have spent a lot and may also miss out if they don't beat Dagenham, promotion is not a nailed on certainty, and the line between success and failure is now so very narrow.
Then you only have to look at Dagenham, Rochdale and Bury to see what can be achieved on a shoe string and the expectancy levels at those clubs is lower. But there is a much higher sense of expectancy at Saltergate and the players have to realise and then deal much better with that expectancy.
I have learnt a lot and feel I am a much better manager then when I first took the job. I think the people that feel I shouldn't be Chesterfield's manager are pretty much the same people that did want me as manager in the first place. I also feel our home form needs to improve and I would like if given the chance to address that in the last season at Saltergate which will be a pretty historic and pretty memorable in itself. I would like the Club to finish on a high at Saltergate but we will have to wait and see what the board decide to do.
I have been here along time now. I came here when, lets face it, my legs had gone and I just had enough left in the tank to finish the season that we won promotion so there wasn't much affection for me as a player at the end of my playing career. I then joined the staff and became assistant manager to Dave Rushbury so perhaps there's a boredom factor and some people might be sick of the sight of me. I am not the first and, probably won't be last, Chesterfield manager to get some stick from the fans. So a new person at the helm will be attractive to some which is understandable. But I don't think that a new manager will make everything okay. There are a few problems here which also have an influence. Things like not having a decent training ground, which is not the fault of the club and something that is being worked on for the future. The new grounds on the horizon and it would be nice to see some bricks and mortar start to go up which will make the new ground a reality. Of course I want to be part of that!
I have worked here in the health and safety hazard that is Saltergate. It's a lovely little ground but for the club to progress like we think it can we need to get things right both on and off the pitch. I think the environment at Saltergate can inhibit us. I thought in the first half of the season the atmosphere, because a section of the supporters dislike of myself made it very difficult for the players. In the second half of the season perhaps some stopped coming but the atmosphere improved as did the performances and results. I don't think that was coincidental and when working together can help make a good future for the club.
