Lee: The pitch was poor

Posted on: Sun 05 Apr 2009

A frustrated  Lee Richardson spoke to Spireites World and immediately spoke about the Moss Rose pitch which he clearly felt was substandard  and Lee said

"I think the pitch was poor and the game was always going to scrappy and the bone hard pitch as also appears to cost Lewis Montrose for the season. He fell awkwardly and jarred his knee and its disappointing  but big positives are we got a point after not playing well in our tenth game in a little over four weeks. So tiredness played a part but the surface was the main factor on the game .

It seems to be a strategy of some clubs and we are seeing a lot of substandard pitches in the lower leagues. In cricket you get fined for producing substandard pitches and I think football will have to do something similar n the future. It's cost us a player today for the rest of the season and you look round the pitch and you can see water pipes all over the place, so you can't  use a lack of a sprinkler system as an excuse."

Going on to cover the game Lee explained his thinking of switching the midfield around following Lewis Montrose's injury  when he brought on Lloyd Kerry and switched Derek Niven to the right of midfield

"I just think Lloyd and Derek are too similar to play in the middle together and we lost Lewis who can get it down and play it and it worked fairly well in recent weeks when we have played Jamie Lowry in there"

On the game itself Lee continued

"We started very well and got the goal but dropped back and they got an equaliser and they were the better team for the majority of the first half and we had a bit of luck when they hit the cross bar. Second half it was pretty much is trying to play football on a pitch that doesn't help you play football. I thought Darren Currie was going to nick it but there was a great block by a defender.  So we have to regroup for a massive game against Lincoln on Tuesday night and concentrate on what we can do."
