Chesterfield defender Stuart Howson will miss the start of the season following a freak training ground incident when he over extended himself when stretching for a ball.  The full results of a scan now reveal he has damaged the cartilage in his left knee and so he is to have an operation in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Chris Brandon, who is experiencing some tightness in his hamstrings, is to visit the FA training facility at Lilleshall for a special assessment. He has missed full training for the last week.

Better news for Caleb Folan with fears now discounted by a specialist that he has a hernia.  The player is to resume full training once again.

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland said: "It is usual to have a few tight groins and hamstrings with the high intensity of training at this stage of pre-season.  I am not worried unduly, in fact I am well pleased with the hard work being put in by the lads"
