It has already been reported that Derek Niven is being treated for testicular cancer and, that after the results of a CT scan had proved negative, he was due to see a specialist to determine the need for any further treatment.
That treatment has now been identified as one session of chemotherapy, which will be undertaken in the next couple of weeks, purely as a precautionary measure.
Ahead of that he is to start light training and, following the chemotherapy, is expected to resume full training with the Spireites early in the New Year.
Messages of support continue to flood in from supporters and well-wishers far and wide and these are very much appreciated by Derek whose mood at the moment can best be described as 'chipper'.
Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "Everyone at the club is looking forward to having Derek back in action again with every hope that this chapter in his football career can be put well and truly behind him."
The 24 year old midfielder joined Chesterfield in December 2003 from Bolton Wanderers and has so far made 199 league appearances for the Spireites and scored 14 league goals.
