JONATHAN HOWARD

Jonathan Howard

5' 10" tall, weighing 11st 7lbs and bearing more than a passing resemblance to Mulder from the X-Files, 30-year-old Jonathon has been with the Spireites since December 1994 and he is one of only two players still at the club who played in the epic 1997 FA Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough.  Indeed, Jonathon did more than just play in that game - it was his shot, in the 70th minute, which landed over the line but wasn't allowed by referee David Elleary.  That effort would have given Chesterfield a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go and with Boro already a man short would surely have guaranteed the Spireites a place in the Wembley final.  There's never a Russian linesman around when you need one.

Jonathon was born in Sheffield on Oct 7 1971 and signed for Rotherham United as a schoolboy at the age of 14.  On leaving school an apprenticeship at the Millers followed and he became a full professional at the age of 18.  His first team debut came in the 1991-92 season but it was late in Rotherham's promotion campaign of 1992-93 before he got a run in the team.  Overall Jon started 25 league games at Rotherham, plus another 11 as sub, and scored 5 goals.

A change of management at Millmoor in the summer of 1994 saw Jonathon fall out of favour, though he remained at the club on a week-to-week basis, until November of that year when he had a short spell in the Unibond League with Buxton before joining Chesterfield, initially on trial.

Jon scored in his third game, a vital goal in a 3-1 win at promotion rivals Walsall, but his most vital goals in that 1994-95 season came in the 5-2 play-off win over local rivals Mansfield when he scored an equaliser in normal time and finished off the Stags with the last goal in extra time to take the Spireites to Wembley, where they beat Bury 2-0 to clinch promotion.

During his time at Saltergate Jon has alternated between a striker's role, and a wide role on the right side of midfield.  His best season from a scoring viewpoint was in 1996-97 with 9 league goals.  More importantly, that season he scored both goals in the Spireites 2-0 win over Bristol City in the third round of the FA Cup and won the penalty, scored by Tom Curtis, which clinched the 1-0 win in round five over Nottingham Forest.  Jon also weighed in with 9 league goals in 1998-99.  Overall he has played 207 times for the Spireites, 139 of these being as a starter, with 68 appearances as a sub.  It was in a substitutes role that he was used to great effect in the 2000-01 promotion season, starting only 13 games but coming off the bench 18 times.
