WELCOME JAMIE BURT & DANNY WALSH

Posted on: Wed 17 Nov 2004
Last Saturday prior to the Southend Utd Cup Tie  Nicky Law made two new player signings, which, in the heat of the FA Cup battle, passed by largely unnoticed. Ironically one of the new men, 22 year old Jamie Burt, pictured in the Boardroom just before he signed a contract to the end of next season, made his mark in the FA Cup first round, playing for Whitby Town against Plymouth Argyle.

The original tie in the North East was on Match of the Day, Whitby clinched a draw against the Third Division promotion chasers, but despite going out at Home Park in the replay, Jamie, a nippy forward, scored a goal. He replaces Mark Jones in the squad head count in these embargo ruled days.
The second new man is Danny Walsh (23), a midfielder who was released by Oldham Athletic last summer. He's already played in our reserves and his wages for the rest of the season are being sponsored by his Uncle, hence making him a no-cost to the Club player and therefore he's outside the transfer embargo numbers. We can only thank Danny's family for such a marvellous gesture, which will hopefully pay off for all concerned.

Danny made a couple of League appearances for Oldham, both as sub, both times coming on for Mark Innes, at home to Burnley in April 1999 for his debut and at Bristol City the following season. He's suffered with illness in recent times but he's fully fit now and hoping to make his mark in the professional game.

Jamie was a schoolboy with Newcastle United but wasn't taken on as an apprentice, was at Carlisle United for a while and he played non-league football around the Northern and Unibond Leagues including appearing for Blyth Spartans, a team 1970's Spireites will remember for their FA Cup win against us in 1977 before they went on to Round 5.

Earlier this year he joined Scarborough in the Football Conference but he was forced out there this autumn when the Club were in financial turmoil, Whitby offered him non-contract terms and the TV cameras did the rest. Nicky Law was watching the striker prior to his Cup exploits but Hartlepool United became very interested and we reported to be very disappointed at missing out on Jamie's signature.

Welcome to Saltergate gentlemen, let's hope you both enjoy your time in Derbyshire.
