Spireites fan does his duty

Posted on: Thu 14 Jan 2010

A Chesterfield supporter who is on active service with the Queens Royal Hussars is doing his bit to raise the profile of his favourite football club whilst serving abroad, despite being the only Spireites fan in his regiment.

Nineteen year old Mark Cundy from Ashbourne in Derbyshire, who has supported the Spireites since he was six years old, has served in Cyprus, Canada, Kuwait, Qatar, Poland, Iraq, and is currently in Germany.

Mark said: "I never realised that when my former neighbours, - the Mees - who were Chesterfield fans, took me to Saltergate in 1997 that Chesterfield FC would become such a massive part of who I am."

"My favourite player then was Jon Howard and I hardly missed a game whilst at school until I joined the Army."

Proud to be a Spireite!

"I don't worry that I am the only Spireite in the regiment as I am the proudest fan here and I want the manager and players to know that wherever I am in the world I am following the Blues."

"I even set up a Spireites Club Shop in Basra but too many West Brom and Brummy fans and the economic downturn meant it folded."

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan said: "We understand that Mark may get some stick for supporting his home town team instead of a premiership outfit."

He added: "We want all our fans to enjoy a promotion party at the end of the season and if we are successful this would be a great way for Mark to own the bragging rights in his regiment."
