Posted on: Wed 23 Dec 2009

Saltergate is now becoming a pilgrimage for football supporters from other parts of the world who want to make one last visit to our historic old ground in this the Spireites final season before moving to the new b2net stadium later this year.

This group of Dutch football fans, who support Vitesse Arnhem, called in this weekend and met up with Andy Morris on the frosty snow covered Saltergate pitch.  Chesterfield's game at Port Vale was a victim of the weather, and so would any attempt to play a game at Saltergate.

Jeroen va der Weegen said: "It was great to get to see this historic old ground before it goes.  Last time I was here a few years ago the Spireites played Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup and I pleased to see it looks just the same.

He added: "We want to thank the people at Chesterfield FC for making us so welcome after we had just turned up on spec completely unannounced."

After taking in the Friday night game at Grimsby, the Dutch lads made the quick detour to visit the Recreation Ground before moving on to watch Sheffield Wednesday play Swansea City.
