Alf, a 27 year old Norwegian, has seen Chesterfield play ten times mostly by making the long trip from the island of Dønna in Helgeland. This time a family celebration in London enabled Alf to leave the others watching Spurs at Stamford Bridge to see a hard fought Chesterfield win and to meet a few of his heroes.
It was Championship Manager and the FA Cup run that first drew the Scandinavian to follow the Spireites. It was Kevin Davies' hat-trick against Bolton, a match shown in Norway, which started the passion; although his favourite player was another FA Cup hero Tom Curtis. Alf was able to follow much of that Cup run on local television, a feat he repeated with the recent Coca-Cola Cup success.
He first came to see us play in 1998 before returning several times the following season. Now in ten visits he has never seen us lose. Even on TV he has only seen us beaten by Premiership opposition!
Alf plays as a striker for his home town club in the Norwegian third division with their new season just a few weeks away. He did train with Chesterfield while doing a computer course at HuddersfieldUniversity but has not seen a match live in six years.
Back in Dønna he is a nurse and lives with his girlfriend Christina and their two young sons. He has said he will propose to Christina only if she agrees to honeymoon in Chesterfield during the football season!
At the Crewe game Alf was a guest of the Club and had a tour of the ground and met players and officials including FA Cup hero Jamie Hewitt. He was able to meet the players in the dressing room and had his photograph taken with the FA Cup commemorative trophies in the Board Room.
Vice-Chairman Jason Elliott, on hearing about our record while Alf had been watching, was last heard trying to arrange transport from London to Cheltenham for him and his family.
