Our town has twinning links with four towns and cities abroad: Troyes in France, Darmstadt in Germany, Yangquan in China and, the youngest of the links, Tsumeb in Namibia.
Mutual understanding, rather than an aid-based relationship, is the aim of this twinning link. Correspondence links between schoolchildren and adults, using English (the official language in Namibia) will assist this process.
A few years ago Chesterfield FC asked fans to donate shirts they didn't want or need and these were to be sent to help youngsters in Tsumeb. We know they were very well received at the time but we now know they are still in use. Derek Sharratt, a twinning representative, is out in Namibia at the moment and he explains " The other day on my way to Tsintsabis (60 km from Tsumeb, Namibia) I came across this boy collecting water and wearing a Chesterfield shirt. How is that for spreading the word of the blues even in the deepest of Africa?"
