Chesterfield FC, in conjunction with The Football League Trust, is lending its support to the Government's Get On campaign, which is launching a major competition to find the nation's best new football chant.

The Get On campaign aims to encourage the millions of adults in England who experience difficulties with English and maths, or who would benefit from brushing up on these skills, to enrol on free courses in their area by calling 0800 66 0800.

The courses help adults get the basic skills they need to improve their lives both at home and at work.

The Football League Trust is fully behind this initiative, and we are exceptionally happy to support the programme. Football affects so many different people in so many different ways, and what better way to show your passion and commitment to your team than singing, and chanting positively?

To promote the campaign, Get On is drawing on the link between chants and language skills, and challenging football fans across the country to come up with a new football chant to impress the judges, football legend John Barnes and resident poet at Barnsley FC Ian McMillan, for the chance to win fantastic Football League ticket prizes.

Invitation for Spireites fans

John CrootChesterfield community director John Croot said: "We hope our fans will enter the competition as I think we need to start thinking about freshening up some of our Spireite chants.

"I recall witty chants from the 70s which were sung with great gusto by the Kop and I would like to think we could breath new life into the traditional way of supporting the team."

The football club is issuing an invitation for Spireites fans, especially those in the heart of the Kop, to come together to get some new chants going.

John Croot said: "All football chants come from the fans and the club would like the fans to get together to come up with new chants that would make Saltergate a formidable place for visiting teams to visit."

All fans who are interested in putting together some new Spireite chants, including the Kop drummer, should ring or text John Croot on 07896 314 692 to leave their details so some chanting sessions can be organised.

Meanwhile, the competition itself is live now and entrants can also submit their chants either by post or online at the Get On website www.direct.gov.uk/geton until Friday 20 March.
