The FA has rejected Chesterfield's appeal over the sending off of Craig Davies during last weekend's first league game of the season at home to Barnet. The Spireites striker was adjudged to have made a reckless tackle on Barnet's Steve Kabba by match referee Geoff Eltringham from Tyne and Wear.
Evidence submitted by the club to the Football Association reveals that Davies had in fact played the ball first in what appeared to be a fair and competitive manner and that the punishment of a three game match ban appeared to be excessively harsh.
Despite the appeal Davies has been suspended from the Spireites first three first team games after August 7th and missed last night's 2-1 Carling Cup defeat at the hands of former FA Cup foes Middlesbrough.
He goes on to miss Saturday's away game at Port Vale and the home game against Hereford United later this month.
A disappointed Chesterfield manager said: "It is hard to understand why the appeal has been turned down as the lad played the ball"
On last night Sheridan said: "We gave it real go, especially in the second half but despite the headed goal from Dwayne Mattis we just coudn't overcome the two nil deficit at the break."
On the stadfium he said: "The atmosphere being created at the b2net by the fans is superb, the place was bouncing."
