Chesterfield FC has revealed that midfielder Darren Currie's absence from the team at Barnet last Saturday was due to a last minute glitch in the paperwork and not just down to a stomach bug as first reported.

Although the player had suffered some illness late last week it has now turned out that his non-appearance for the first game of the season came because the club was not prepared to take any risks with his registration.

The club was concerned that if his registration happened to be rescinded by the football authorities it could lead to possible penalties.

The registration process has been drawn out due to Currie's former club Luton Town coming out of adminstration during the registration process.

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "The club took the decision that until everything was sorted 100% it was not worth taking any risks and that has now proved a sensible decision in view of the result at Barnet."

"We are hopeful the matter will be sorted in time for Darren to be included in the squad for the Carling Cup tie at Preston on Tuesday night."
