The Spireites have signed Manchester United midfielder Michael Barnes on loan until the end of the season and the deal is expected to be ratified by the football authorities so he is eligible to play in this Saturday's home league game against Grimsby Town.

The 19 year old pacy winger is a key member of the Red's current reserve side and is described as a lightning fast winger who is comfortable with either foot.  He made his first team debut against Crewe in the Carling Cup in October 2006.

Chesterfield manager Lee Richardson said: "He is an exciting prospect and we are delighted that Sir Alex Ferguson has allowed him to join us on loan as we have had an eye on him for some time."

Michael Barnes replaces Felix Bastians who has returned to his parent club Nottingham Forest at the end of his three month loan spell with the Spireites.

This latest signing follows the news that Championship side Stoke City have allowed striker Adam Rooney to extend his loan spell with the Spireites until the end of the season. He has scored six goals during the first half of the season.

Lee Richardson said: "We are very pleased that Adam Rooney is staying with us.  We also want to thank Felix Bastians for his efforts over the last three months and we will continue to monitor his progress as he has a lot to offer."

Meanwhile, youngster Josh Law will remain at Altreton Town on loan until the end of the season and forward Jamie Jackson's loan spell at Matlock Town has been extended for second month.
