Such was the anger of the crowd that it was rumoured that the referee had been taken to hospital after the match and a number of fans went to the hospital at Holywell Cross to 'check on his condition'.
The Derbyshire Times refuted the hospital tale but their correspondent 'Casual' did comment on the official. "A good many of the decisions of the referee did not find favour and there was much booing which culminated in a demonstration after the game when a crowd surged round the players' entrance but the police saw to it that no harm came to the referee."
