The boys set off for Gillingham (for the second time this season) on Monday hoping not to repeat the last eventful trip down to Kent. I think another 15 hour bus trip would have finished the boys off and we would probably forfeit our future away games to Gillingham for years to come. But the weather held out and the team managed to get down to Kent unscathed and it was all worth it. Two well taken goals from inform Smalley gave us the win against a good Gillingham side and made the horrible trip back in December all worth it. Another clean sheet also takes it to three clean sheets in a row and seven games unbeaten in the league, a run dating back to the 23rd of November.
Our previous two fixtures against Stevenage and Shrewsbury proved to be really tough games where we had to work hard and fight for the points. The Gaffer called Stevenage the "weightlifters" of league two and he wasn't far off. They were a really big, strong outfit that knew their strengths and put us under pressure and we knew we were in a game against them. But fair play to the lads, when we had the ball we played some good stuff and at the other end whatever Stevenage threw at us we dealt with and a good individual goal from Drew saw us grind out a clean sheet and a massive three points.
Shrewsbury is always a tough away game but we have gone there a few times over the last couple of years and picked up points, so we went there confident as always. They showed earlier on in the season at our place that when we give them time and space they can play some neat football and they almost pulled back four goals so going to their place we were better prepared. So getting a draw was a fair and good result. I know a 0-0 draw sounds boring but it wasn't that bad a game and we played good and I think a point away at Shrewsbury is a good result. Smalley had a great chance right at the death to nick all three points but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, I will let him get away with it, it was a bobbly pitch plus he more than made up for it on Tuesday night. Another pleasing sight was the away support (again). There were over 600 Chesterfield supporters that made the trip over. We always seem to get a good following at Shrewsbury and I don't know why. Maybe the new stadium, but it has been there a few years now. It's not like it's a local derby it's nearly a two hour drive away. Maybe I'm missing something but if you know the reason then get in touch and let me know.
The boys always take the micky out of me about my Aussie sayings but it's been a few weeks since I have written one and all of them are asking for my saying. As soon as they pick up the program they all go straight to see what it is this week, so as much as they take the mick they all love my sayings really.
This week I thought I would do something a bit closer to me. I'm known amongst the lads as the busy player, always getting involved and always willing to do things first. So the lads will probably be saying this to me for a while but what the hell.
