Tom Anderson’s leveller deep into stoppage time saw Chesterfield claim what could be a vital point.
His goal sparked great scenes both on the pitch and in the away end and the defender was overjoyed at the timing of his first goal of the season.
“It was brilliant. That’s what footballs all about, there’s nothing better than a last minute goal,” he said.
“I think it’s the least we deserved because I think we did enough to win the game but it’s a great point and could be a turning point in the season.”
Gary Caldwell’s men showed great determination on Tuesday on a night where Chesterfield had to battle hard for what turned out to be a deserved point and Anderson knew they were always going to get one more scoring chance.
He said: “I think we’ve shown our togetherness, our willingness as a team and great character.
“We can’t just think that we’ve missed a few chances and that’s it. We’ve got to keep going and luckily we did and it fell to me and I put it away but that’s what we’ve got to keep doing, we’ve got to stay together.”
The Spireites have been playing with a back three since Caldwell’s arrival, and the 23 year-old feels the team are now improving in the system and looking more solid restricting Gillingham to only a handful of opportunities.
“I can’t remember them having many clear cut chances, obviously they hit the post in the first half but I felt quite comfortable, and quite solid,” he explained.
“When you play in it for the first time it’s something you need to get used to but you’ve just got to defend well, make sure you talk to each other so there’s not much difference. You’ve just got to make sure you listen to what the Gaffer says and do it on a Saturday or Tuesday."
The Blues have another crucial game against Bury, who are also in the bottom four, on Saturday and Anderson is looking for the players and fans to show the same kind of spirit again at the weekend.
He said: “Every game’s a big game now.
“We’ll get around each other and stick together. All the willingness and drive from the team we’ll keep doing it and keep focusing on all the games to do it in.
“It’s great for the club that we’re all together. A last minute goal, it doesn’t get much better so it’s a great turning point and hopefully we’ll kick on now.”
