Chesterfield have made their first close-season signing, securing the signature of defender Daniel Jones.

The 27-year-old left-back, who was a free agent after leaving Port Vale, joins the Spireites on a two-year contract.

Jones had no hesitation in signing after speaking to the manager and viewing the facilities at the Proact Stadium. He said: "I'm really delighted to have joined Chesterfield because it's a very ambitious club.

"It's a very exciting time at the club following the title win and I can't wait to be involved. I know Sam Morsy very well and he had nothing but rave reviews about the club. I'm ready to get on with my career now."

Spireites boss Paul Cook said: "We feel that Daniel will prove to be a valuable addition to the squad. He has pace and likes to play football so he will suit our style."

Jones began his career at Wolves and had several spells out on loan before joining Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2010. After making 37 appearances for the Owls, he signed for Vale in January of last year and helped them win promotion.
