A late Sam Togwell equaliser saved the day for Chesterfield in what was a nail-biting encounter at the Proact Stadium.
The stoppage-time leveller came from an Alex Henshall corner that fell to Togwell at the back post, with the Spireites midfielder making no mistake in finishing from six yards to send the Chesterfield fans wild.
The well-earned draw keeps the Spireites four points from seventh place with three games remaining.
Chesterfield started the the game as the brighter side, seeing more of the ball and creating the better opportunities. Armand Gnanduillet missed an early Togwell through ball by a matter of inches and Bradford were forced to clear off the line after an in-swinging Conor Townsend corner caused a brief scramble in their six-yard box.
Just before the opening goal, Jay O'Shea played a measured through ball to Tendayi Darikwa who broke free on the right wing and got a strong shot on target that failed to beat Jon McLaughlin.
Against the run of play, Bradford opened the scoring soon after the half-hour mark through Nahki Wells. The Bantams took a quick throw-in, James Hanson controlled the ball and played it into Wells who hooked the ball past Tommy Lee.
Following the goal, Chesterfield had a succession of corners and kept the visitors pressed in their own half with a lot of smart play in midfield but they failed to capitalise on the pressure and went in a goal down at half-time.
After the break Chesterfield struggled to get a hold of the game, allowing a determined Bradford side the majority of possession. Wells in particular continued to cause problems for the Spireites back four throughout the second half.
Ten minutes into the half, Paul Cook replaced Townsend with Marc Richards, who would prove to be instrumental in the Chesterfield equaliser. Darikwa headed the ball out to Richards on the right wing, who then drove a low ball back across the area. Darikwa endeavoured to get on the end of the cross and finished neatly across the face of the Bradford goalkeeper.
Following the goal, both teams scrapped to gain the lead with Bradford having two penalty claims denied.
The Bantams regained the lead in the 79th minute through Ricky Ravenhill when the Bradford midfielder finished well from outside the area after Lee's punched clearance fell straight to his feet.
After a high spirited game at the Proact, both teams will feel that that they could have taken more from the game but both will leave satisfied with a point.
Chesterfield's play-off ambitions live on and the push continues at home to Plymouth on Tuesday night.
