Iron 2 Spireites 2

There was one change to the Chesterfield line-up from the team narrowly beaten at Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day; that saw Craig Westcarr come back in for the departing Tope Abedayi. Scott Boden stepped up to the bench. The team lined up thus:

Talbot, Trotman, Robertson, Smith

Mendy, Allott, Whitaker, Westcarr

Bowery, Morgan

Subs: Fleming, Niven, Mattis, Downes, Boden.

An indirect free kick for a back pass close to goal came Chesterfield's way in the second minute. Whitaker, Morgan and Westcarr stood over the ball with every Scunthorpe player inside their own six-yard box. Whitaker touched the ball to Morgan, whose powerful shot was blocked by Johnson in the Iron goal.

At the other end, Jordan Robertson's shot was blocked wide for a corner by Talbot on 4; the flag kick was cleared. Westcarr went down under O'Connor's challenge while chasing Talbot's cross on 8, but there were no penalty shouts. Bowery was shoved in the back by Canavan just outside the box on 10; Whitaker kick looked for Trotman and he sent it back into the six-yard box; the home defence just managed to clear as Mendy stretched to get to the loose ball.

Against a struggling side at home, Chesterfield did enough early on to make the home fans restless. Much of the visitors' attacking impetus was being fed by longer balls to the hard-working Bowery.Scunthorpe's second corner came, like the first, with a deflection off Talbot. Trotman cleared; the ball came to Morgan, who broke, but planted his pass to Bowery a little behind the Chesterfield frontman.

Bowery was more accurate seconds later in picking out the run of Morgan, but Dean's shot skimmed into the keeper's hands. Robertson played the ball forward and Johnson came out of his box to claim it with his hands. Johnson was booked and a direct free kick on the left-hand edge of the box resulted. Westcarr's cross-shot went rather too wide to allow Trotman a header.

A third corner came the way of the home side on 23, again off Talbot. O'Connor's kick went to the back post and Canavan rose free to head the ball into the Chesterfield net and give his side the lead.

Chesterfield's first corner came after hard work by Bowery on 26. Scunthorpe broke from this and Ryan found Dagnall, who went down in the box under a Lee challenge. Chesterfield were awarded a goal kick and Dagnall was booked for diving.

Bowery and Morgan were looking isolated up front as the midfield were unable to service them. After a scrappy period, Talbot came in with a crucial interception to deny Jordan Robertson on 39. Barcham headed goalwards a minute later but Lee got down well to his left to smother the ball. Lee came out on 41 to command a long kick from his opposite number and met the ball with a with a header (!) but collided with other players; luckily Barcham put the ball out and Jamie Hewitt was able to come on to attend to the stricken Talbot. Talbot left the field with his right arm tucked into an emergency sling fashioned from his shirt and Scott Boden came on as the first half entered stoppage time. Alex Mendy dropped back to fullback pending a further reorganisation at halftime.

Half time: Iron 1 Spireites 0. Attendance: 4456 (1079 from Chesterfield.)

Cliff Byrne came on for Andy Wright for the start of the second half. Within two minutes of the re-start SCOTT BODEN fired a speculative shot from the corner of the area that came back off his far post and into the net to equalise. Lee had to leap to preserve parity on 54 to tip Norwood's shot over, and O'Connor's corner was cleared away after swinging dangerously close to going straight in.

Westcarr went into the book on 56 for denying a quick resumption of play after Scunthorpe won a throw on halfway. Dagnall broke and shot inches wide of the far post on 58. Boden played Morgan in on 60 and Canavan brought Morgan down a yard outside the box to earn a booking. Chesterfield won a corner from the free kick and won another moments later as they pressed hard for the lead.

Chesterfield won another corner after Duffy put Bowery's effort from a free kick out. Trotman headed it down into the danger area but the ball went out for a goal kick in a scramble. Lee contested the award of a corner on 65 and O'Connor took it; Jordan Robertson seemed to head it in from a ruck of players but the referee disallowed the goal, for pushing.

Scunthorpe replaced Chris Dagnall with Bobby Grant on 66. O'Connor took a free kick and curled the ball in, but Boden cleared. Morgan chased the clearance down and put Johnson, the young loanee keeper, under pressure; he lost the ball to the prowling Westcarr, whose lob from the edge of the box sailed into the unguarded net to give Chesterfield the lead, on 70 minutes.

Smith went in on O'Connor and sent him flying, fairly. Derek Niven replaced Jordan Bowery on 75. Niven went alongside Whitaker in central midfield, while Allott went into a position between midfield and defence.

Mendy was booked for a clumsy foul on Togwell on 77. Mendy's saved shot won a corner for Chesterfield on 79 which Whitaker took; Trotman leapt highest but put his header over the bar. Scunthorpe made their last substitution when Thompson replaced Norwood after 81.

Morgan did well to pick Westcarr out and his shot was turned away. At the other end Lee came out amid an uncertain defence to thump a Thompson cross out for a throw. Morgan went down off the ball and Jimmy Ryan stood over him to remonstrate. Grant's shot from a Ryan cross was sliced and Ryan himself put the ball wide.

Mattis replaced the struggling Morgan on 88. Mattis joined central midfield, where Chesterfield employed five to try to keep what they'd worked hard for. The fourth official announced five minutes of stoppage time. In the second minute of this, Ryan fired home an unstoppable shot from around 20 yards to grab an equaliser. Smith, Westcarr and Niven all tried shots but without luck as the points were shared.
