Chesterfield brought Drew Talbot off the bench to the right side of midfield at Aldershot, allowing Wade Small to reunite with Jack Lester up front. That meant that Davide Somma had to drop to the bench, where he was joined by the returning Aaron Downes.
Aldershot showed first, winning a second-minute corner kick. The corner was headed away by Lester. From the break, Djilali put Small in but Herd got over to tackle well, at the expense of Chesterfield's first corner of the day. The flag kick was sadly wasted, dribbling along the goal line and out of play.
Jackson crossed on 8 and Lee got the faintest of touches on the ball, which clipped the crossbar on its way out for a corner, that was inadvertently cleared by a Shots player. Small and Morris combined and the Scunthorpe loanee stroked the ball goalwards on 12, but the ball lacked power and a defender was given time to get back to clear.
Small won a corner off Charles on 18 but the ball was cleared. A minute later Blackburn conceded another corner, which Perkins took. Breckin's flick was cleared but the ball was returned since the home side had brought everyone back. Another corner was crossed toward Page at the back post but Herd headed clear. A foul on Donnelly relieved the pressure on the Hampshire side's goal.
The match was anyone's at this stage. Although Chesterfield were coming more into their own they weren't yet able to really hurt their hosts.
Chalmers was yellow-carded on 25, but the reason was not immediately apparent. Aldershot managed to get forward and Jackson shot wide. Aldershot replaced the recently-cautioned Chalmers with Halls on 27 and the feeling was that he was taken off before he was sent off! Talbot was penalised for a foul on 27 and had to go off for treatment to a cut.
With Talbot off the field Aldershot seemed set to take the lead when Straker was left with a simple tap-in, Lee looked to have got a touch but the referee felt that Straker, alone, had managed to mess up this golden chance, awarding a goal kick. Aldershot won another corner on 36. Donnelly took it and Charles came in at the near post, but the ball was cleared for another corner. Djilali cleared this one to the halfway line.
Talbot returned to the fray on 38.
Lester hit the post with a good-looking chance on 40. Djilali went down after a clash of heads with Herd. A Talbot cross on 44 hit Charles and went out for a corner. Perkins and Little worked it but the cross was poor. Aldershot broke and the ball was won, but it came back to Morgan, whose low drive was saved by Lee. With halftime closing, Jackson crossed but the ball ran across the Spireite goalmouth without anyone troubling it.
Halftime: 0-0. Attendance: 2977 (286 Spireites.)
As the persistent rain grew more heavy, Talbot crossed on 47 and Lester and Small went sliding in, but neither was able to connect. A decent Spireite start to the half continued with a corner award on 52. Perkins' kick looked for the head of Breckin but ended up over on the other wing. Little brought the ball back up and Lester crossed, but no-one committed themselves and the ball scooted across the mouth of the Aldershot goal.
An Aldershot corner on 57 was cleared by Djilali. The home side made a substitution on the hour, replacing Straker with Bozanic, the Reading loanee.
Halls' shot on 61 needed intervention from Lee to get down and palm it away. The home side began to enjoy more influence as Chesterfield looked in need of fresh legs in midfield. Rob Page became the first Chesterfield man into the book on 65, for pulling down Morgan. Three players joined the Chesterfield wall but a cross was aimed towards the far post, where Morris headed away. Donnelly's shot deflected off Talbot for a corner on 67. Charles was allowed far too free a header from the kick and gave the home side the lead.
Boden replaced Small before the kick-off. Aldershot made their last substitution on 73, bringing Harding on for Jackson. Somma and Picken came on for Lester and Talbot with 16 minutes left.Little's cross was met with the head of Somma but Ruez saved brilliantly. Perkins broke through and fired a goalbound shot, but the ball hit the post and came out; the ball was returned towards Somma's head but the offside flag went up. Perkins again strove goalwards and Somma forced a corner; the ball came over and Morris blasted the ball home, but the goal was disallowed.
